Imagine being the passenger of a vehicle, on your way to your destination, with no one sitting in the driver seat. By 2021, this imagination will come to life. Ford partnered and invested with four technology companies to make this dream come to a reality.
Part of Ford's purpose of developing a fully autonomous vehicle is due to Ford Smart Mobility: "our plan to be a leader in autonomy, connectivity, mobility, customer experience, and analytics."
The vehicle will run without a steering wheel, gas pedal, or brake pedal within geofenced regions as part of a ride sharing experience. This will officially make the vehicle an SAE 4 capable car, meaning that it will be a fully autonomous vehicle, completing all aspects of driving without the human driver.
To reach this determined goal, Ford devoted to widening its research in advanced algorithms, 3-D mapping, radar technology, and camera sensors. To speed up the process in developing the vehicle, Ford collaborated with four main investments, including Velodyne, SAIPS, Niremberg Neuroscience LLC and civil maps.
